About Maria

Hi there and welcome to Maria's call blog. I'm Maria, a 25 year old from England.

During my time studying at university in the UK I became increasingly concerned with the attitude towards women and feminism that I was seeing, I spent one year studying abroad in Denmark as part of my degree and the contrast in the way women were treated there compared with at home surprised me. At this point I started to research and study these attitudes, namely rape culture within higher education.

I have since been involved with organisations surrounding women's rights and attitudes towards women and sexual violence. I have given presentations and workshops on the subject through which I was filmed for the It's Our Call documentary, Currently I am combining my interest in this with my love for travel and am travelling the world, continuing to research these issues on a global scale and now am the main contributor to Maria's call blog.

I wholeheartedly believe, without doubt, that equality is best for everybody. We are still far from it today but are making leaps and bounds in getting to where we need to be, only when everyone in the world has equality will we be able to function as a global society to the best of our abilities. Sexism and prejudice have no place in today's society and it is disgraceful that women still face sexual violence on a daily basis, this needs to stop and we, as individuals and as a society, have the power to stop it.
